(Periodic) undernourishment is a major problem in some areas, especially for children, the elderly, and pregnant and lactating women. Productivity per hectare is often too low for farmers to provide their families with enough food throughout the year, and there is a lack of affordable, healthy food on local markets. Dependence on food imports and food assistance increases the vulnerability of many communities.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ module_class=”images-row” _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”0px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.communitiesregreenthesahel.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/IA-food-systems-tomatoes-from-a-garden-in-Burkina-Faso.png” title_text=”IA food systems – tomatoes from a garden in Burkina Faso” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Tomatoes from a garden in Burkina Faso

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.communitiesregreenthesahel.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/IA-food-systems-education-about-healthy-nutrition-for-parents-in-Niger.png” title_text=”IA food systems – education about healthy nutrition for parents in Niger” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Education about healthy nutrition for parents in Niger

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”22px” text_line_height=”34px” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Access to food

Packed with protein, vitamins and fibre, and available year-round, FMNR food products are crucial for preventing undernourishment, particularly in times of food scarcity. We are raising awareness among communities about the nutritional value of foods that are harvested and produced from FMNR trees. They are a key component of more balanced, healthy diets.

We are also working to strengthen the resilience of communities by ensuring more stable and equitable access to food. In collaboration with community healthcare workers, local authorities, and farmers, we are supporting the establishment of community food banks, where farmers can provide part of their harvest in return for access to stored grain. Our aim is to ensure that healthy food remains affordable and accessible to undernourished families. By encouraging the active participation of local farmers, and promoting the exchange of skills and resources, food banks contribute to the economic empowerment of rural communities.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ module_class=”images-row” _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”0px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.communitiesregreenthesahel.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/IA-food-systems-storage-of-grain.png” title_text=”IA food systems – storage of grain” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Storage of grain

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.communitiesregreenthesahel.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/IA-food-systems-peanuts-are-a-very-nutritious-food-that-play-an-important-role-in-the-Sahels-local-food-systems.png” title_text=”IA food systems – peanuts are a very nutritious food that play an important role in the Sahel’s local food systems” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Peanuts are a very nutritious food that play an important role in the Sahel’s local food systems

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ module_class=”related-posts full-width” _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#75BDD7″ width=”100%” max_width=”100%” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Related stories

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_blog posts_number=”3″ include_categories=”62″ show_author=”off” show_date=”off” show_categories=”off” show_excerpt=”off” show_pagination=”off” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” header_level=”h3″ hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_blog][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Communities Regreen the Sahel supports farmers in strengthening the resilience of local food systems, enhancing both the health and livelihoods of local communities.
